March 9, 2008. Kagagaling ko lang sa isang outreach. Hay! How I wish na ma-capture ang mga cute faces ng mga superb children na ito... in the most aesthetically pleasing possible!
Bigla ko tuloy na-appreciate ang mga kaibigan kong artists.

I have always been fascinated with the artistic adroitness of the wedding photovideographers. I even studied Photojournalism (at talagang sumasama pa ako sa mga Prenup Shoots!) to have a grasp on this exquisite art! It's one sure way of getting close to the wonderful PhotoVid People, too!

Actually po, madalas na magtalo ang Photovid at Wedding Planners(WP). Kami po kasing mga WP ay masyadong partikular sa oras at detalye ng event. Ang PhotoVid naman ay kung minsan, este madalas (hehehe!=), sinasapian yata ng espiritu ng CREATIVITY! Biglang napapatigil sa mga KODAK MOMENTS! My staff and I can't help but say "Cheese!" na lang, hehe! (Trivia: I attended the Wedding Congress last year and Ms. Aby Arenas reiterated that we should refrain from saying CHEESE. It should be "SATURDAY!" (o kahit ano pang may 'day', hehe!=) para maganda ang ating mga ngiti. Kudos, Ms. Arenas!=)

My colleagues used to tease me this:

"Dinadaan mo lang sa pagpapa-charming ang mga clients mo e!"

Ibang klase raw ang networking ko. Hehehe! =) Imposible raw ang more than 100 weddings (given that I do not spend much on advertisements saka Year 2001 pa lang daw ako kasi nag-start). My wedding guru handles 5 weddings per year lang, can you believe that? =) Pero mayayaman lang naman ng Manila ang tinatanggap niya kasi. Unlike her protege na pang-poor ng Laguna. Charity work, haha! =)

Hmm, contrary to their 'hirits', I work in a Meg-defined system. At hindi po pagpapa-charming lang. & that, I would like to share:

LET US GET STARTED

CREDENDA ON MY OWN

Mode: ALL in one paragraph =)

I have always been a bookworm. I peruse galore! In point of fact, I feel better after purchasing two books a week rather than spending much on luxuries. And unlike typical teenagers, lavishness includes clothes and accessories. Precisely, that is the reason why many people deem me as nerdy or geek. And oh! Let me introduce to you 2 of my faves... Og Mandino and Buddy Kaye! They were my loyal cohort ever since the world turned its back on me. At first, I just bought it because of its title that makes me wonder a lot. The Gift of Acabar? Where or who is Acabar? After several minutes of contemplating, I decided to read its prologue. And after two hours, voila! I had finished reading the novel. Not much impact yet, sadly. I sob but without much pain in my heart. I just pitied the protagonist, Tulo. “Turn away from the crowd and its fruitless pursuit of fame and gold. Never look back as you close your door to the sorry tumult of greed and ambition. Wipe away your tears of failure and misfortune. Lay aside your heavy load and rest until your heart is still. Be at peace…” Tulo Matis is the wonder child of the amorous Pedar and Inga, who both held to the proud customs of their community. The world knows them as Lapps but they call themselves Same in the far north of the Arctic Circle. Although Tulo is a courteous and gracious child, Same prioritize reindeer more than Tulo’s books. He is far different because he has bushels of clear ideas! He writes with so much ardor and eloquence but among other things, he has become an expert on kites. The quirk of fate happens at the festive autumnal roundup. It is an event that challenges each Same family to separate its own reindeer from the others after they have intermingled freely with reindeer from other village herds. He was able to do it at first. But alas, he was off balance when he twirls his lasso over their big stag’s head. Pedar died to rescue Tulo in the charging herd. “Already it is later than you think, for your earthily life, at best, is only the blink of an eye between two eternities. Be unafraid. Nothing here can harm you except yourself. Do that which you dread and cherish those victories with pride. Concentrate your energy…” You know, I used to live in a world bursting of love and idealisms. My loved ones supported me all the way and assisted me incessantly. However, the saying “It is lonely to be on the top” is very real for me. I loathe to be honored as the cream of the crop because my barkada or friends tease me always. I do not enjoy the pressure of being number one. I just want to belong, that’s all. Thus, I chose to be one of the good apprentice, but certainly not the best. I wanted to be in. No, I crave so much to be normal! Lest did I realize that we are all born with super natural abilities, if we will only unleash. “To be everywhere is to be nowhere. Be jealous of your time, since it is your greatest treasure. Reconsider your goals. Before you set your heart too much on anything, examine how happy they are who already possess what you desire…” My best friend taught me to let loose my full potentials. He always enlightens me that we are all here for a purpose, with a special message to deliver and special act of love to bestow. But I just can not dump my comfort zone. And my beloved best friend, the Pedar of my life, was entailed to leave me. And this was when this precious book came handy. And I can somehow relate with the characters that Tulo came in contact with. “Love your family and count your blessings. Reflect on how eagerly they would be sought if you did not have them. Put aside your impossible dreams and complete the task at hand no matter how distasteful. All great achievements come from working and waiting. Be patient. God’s delays are never God’s denials. Hold on. Hold fast…” Inga and Tulo’s sister, Jaana, are very supportive of him. They gave hope in the exasperating days that followed. Due to the wounded leg, he was paralyzed emotionally and psychologically. Yet his mother and sister convinced him not to pity himself. That soon God, who was very busy, would answer their prayers. They had only to remain… to keep trying… and believe. “Know that your paymaster is always near. What you sow, good or evil, that you will reap. Never blame your condition on others. You are what you are through your choice alone..”. While waiting, Tulo had four visitors. The first was Pastor Bjork, who brought a book entitled “The History of Same People”. This prompted Tulo to write again. Days later, Uncle Varno and his son visited him with journal as a gift. Arrol Nobis, the young School Master, was the fourth visitor. Unlike other visitors, Arrol positioned himself outside the invalid’s room and spreads open the newspaper Sabmelas. He told Tulo that there was an article about man’s love affair with kites written by a very talented individual, without the author’s permission yet. That builds up the enthusiasm of Tulo who shuffled apprehensively across the room, arms outstretched for balance. That night, Tulo’s life had indeed been restored. And the journal came truly ingenious. “Learn to live with honest poverty, if you must, and turn to more important matters than transporting gold to your grave. Never meet trouble halfway. ..” My parents and sibling used to acquiesce on my every stance. After all, they consider me as “gifted” because as early as three months old, I knew how to talk simple things like “mama, pa-mamam” or “mother, I want to drink” already. Not only that, I was honored, modesty aside, as Laguna’s Brightest on 1993 and 2005. For them, I am capable of spelling a great difference in this world. However, when the world conspired against me and it seemed that my luck in the real world is over, I began to question God. “Anxiety is the rust of life; when you add tomorrow’s burdens to today’s their weight becomes unbearable. Avoid the mourner’s bench and give thanks, instead, for your defeats. You would not receive them if you did not need them. Always learn from others. He who teaches himself has a fool for a master...” Why is He allowing those monstrous people to persecute me? I am not doing anything against, not even trying to outsmart them, but why do they hate me? Why do they keep on “roaring” at me when I was left there, in one nook, alone and prayerful still? I stayed in my anguish so much, just like Tulo. I was paralyzed like him. All day long, I just cried and pitied myself. “Be careful. Do not overload your conscience. Conduct your life as if it were spent in an arena filled with tattlers. Avoid boasting. If you see anything in you that puffs you with pride look closer and you will find more than enough to make you humble. Be wise….” There came my hero, who loved me unconditionally. A beloved gave me solace during the coldest hours. He accepted me for who I am and valued me with a kind that I can never fathom until now. Months later, my benevolent Auntie Syl and Lola Turs, gave me an Unabridged Webster’s Dictionary. Truly, their wisely chosen gift had been invaluable than any platitudes. And who is my fourth visitor, you may ask. It’s no other than my much loved mentor, Mrs. C. Espino. She gave me a ray of light to follow. She encourages me with so much luminosity in her eyes that I can not help but capture the radiance as well. On 2006, she and the rest of the faculty bestowed on me “The Most Promising” award. It left me wondering, what promise can I still keep and give? “Realize that all men are not created equal, for there is no equality in nature, yet no man was ever born whose work was not born with him. Work every day as if it were your first, yet tenderly touch the lives you touch as if they will all end at midnight…” Then, the second trial came to Jaana and Tulo came when their mother died due to over fatigue. This was shortly followed by a raging blizzard. And through that terrible storm, a miracle happened. Tulo was able to capture an extra ordinary star in the folds of his red kite, giving not only warmth and comfort but a joyful message as well. That simple star that shed light one pristine night on Bethlehem, Acabar. “Love everyone, even those who deny you, for hate is a luxury that you cannot afford. Seek out those in need. Learn that he who delivers with one hand will always gather with two…” My brother Paeng and I know the verity that we should relish each day with our affectionate parents. We know that we are all being called for an awakening destiny- to be one with our Father. Thus, my family and I tried, as much as possible, to hold on even though the world outside is giving us chills. One day, a beleaguering thunder stroke our house and one super typhoon left us penniless and almost homeless. We were all diagnosed with sickness and like Tulo, I was waiting for a soothing succor. I cried to God, knowing that He will listen and believing that He still cares. But it seems that He is too occupied with the aches of other people. It feels like we were put in the “waiting list”. I finally realized how bad it is to be rejected. “Be of good cheer. Above all, remember that very little is needed to make a happy life. Look up. Reach out. Cling simply to God and journey quietly on your pathway to forever with charity and a smile. When you depart it will be said by all that your legacy was a better world than the one you found.” Soon, our Star Acabar came. Mr. & Mrs. Caingal led us to one sweet realization. True love that defies all the logical explanation of the burgeoning matters around us. When I saw Mr. and Mrs. Caingal cried over things that do not affect them at all, I then realize that the world does not revolve solely around me, my family, or us, Filipinos. While healing our humble nation, our ever generous God is guiding us towards the magical verve that binds us all, our One Spirit. And that self-pity and trivial excuses will not alleviate in creating a healthier world. Just like Acabar, Mr. and Mrs. Caingal taught me to proffer something of myself to our world each day. PHILOSOPHICAL QUESTIONS THAT CHILDREN ARE ASKING By Angel MEG

Education starts at home. Sooner, in a child’s life, teachers will come as second parents. Parents and teachers serve as the chief resource persons or the most trusted philosophers, setting the foundation in a child’s mind. And the inquisitions seem to never end…

In a third world country like ours, parents and teachers seem to be more exposed in questions like

“Bakit po ang kaklase kong mayaman, may taga-gawa na project? E ako po, wala”

and

“Is it our obligation to help the needy? E tayo rin po ay mahirap.”

It seems, to me, that our economic situation makes our children to be more emotional when it comes to their questioning.

Metaphysically, many children ask 'what is this?' Parents and teachers can answer that easily, given their limited knowledge on that particular subject matter. However, epistemologically, some children still ask ‘what should we know still?’ and other philosophical questions that require the parents and teachers to exert more (and more and more...) effort. And without the presence of higher cognitive skills such as synthesis, analysis and evaluation, in that order po, some questions can not be really answered well. You can't really ask more details until you answer the essence of that particular knowledge, right? =) So, in that sense, the epistemologist either has to start with that challenge, or pick up from an answer given by the sciences. Then, phenomology asks 'how is it with knowing?' which is pretty intriguing, too. Believe me. =)

Naturally, a busy person leads his/ her child to the great unknown. Notice how our parents or teachers point the tricky questions directly to God. It is not easy to analyze, discuss and elaborate the limited or sensitive answers that we know to children. One of the most famous questions is

"Paano po ako ginawa?"

You know what, I can still recall what my mother told me:

"Inilagay ka ni God sa tiyan ko!" =)

Majority of my friends admitted that they did not exert much effort in answering their children. And since we are in a third world country that is greatly influenced by its colonized past, teachers and parents seem to be inspired by Phillip Reiff’s “The moral life begins with renunciation.” As long as children were not spoiled, some parents and teachers believe that the world will soon answer their queries. Simply, answers will just be exposed.

Personally, my primary and secondary mentors (parents and teachers) taught me the essence of education at such an early age. Many of my childhood inquisitions were not answered but were defined by accumulation, accomplishment, distraction or even fashion of the media. Well, with all that is available for us to read, write or discuss, why is it that so many children know more about the movies than the answers that can be delved in the books? And why aren’t we more discerning about the movies and programs that we watch?

It seems that we should reflect on our younger years now. And perhaps do the same philosophy of Socrates while we enchant ourselves with the incessant "Mirror, mirror, on the wall…” or better yet, with the sensible questions like ...

Are children naturally rational, or must they be trained to be so?

Or, if they are naturally somewhat rational, is that rationality necessarily enhanced by teaching them the arts and sciences? =)

So if you really want to make something happen, you better try More than once." This might mean: You'll attend twenty interviews to get one job. You'll interview forty people to find one good employee. You'll talk to fifty people to sell one house, car, vacuum Cleaner, insurance policy, idea... Seven are resigning from their jobs.
Eleven are venturing into new businesses.

Hmmm, who are they? I won't reveal... yet! =)

Luckily, do you know that our Alumni Homecoming is set on the 24th of August (SMCL's 33rd Anniversary) at St. Thedore Hall? (Yes, that was the fully air conditioned gym! Fast Fact: Tayo po ang unang grumaduate dun!=)

A DECADE AND ONE OF EXCELLENCE. Eleven years after high school graduation, do you feel inspired and lively still? As for me, I feel alive when my emotions are in action! Meanwhile, the 8 BLESSINGS on the 8th Month of the Year are the ff:

* I was invited by my shy colleague to talk in their cooperative. She is a lady of soooo many hats!
Aside from being a resort owner, she is the chairwoman of the said coop and R&D Head of one of the leading food chains in the land. IDOL!!! =)

Also, I will be conducting a series of livelihood seminars (candle-making, soap-making and anything artsy-craftsy=) in several barangays this month. Plus Wedding Planning Seminars (My 1st Love=) at Makati & Personality Development + at Laguna. (Orchids to all who are trusting me po!=)

* My students are learning sooo fast! They are simply amazing! =)

* Got a new (51") TV. Yehey! =)

* Got a new store. My 2nd wedding shop in Laguna. The 3rd one is set to open really soon. Thank God! =)

* Got a new bike. Honda Wave para lang sa subd. I don't know much 'bout driving. Will enroll soon. Pero "commute girl" talaga ang lolah ninyo. Hehehe!=) I can think of so many poems at the bus, jeepneys, etc. =)

Marriage has multiple meanings as stated below:

- Marriage is a relation between man and woman, which the independence is equal the dependence mutual and the obligation reciprocal.
- Marriage is a Ministry
- A divine Institution
- A paradox which feels sometimes like a state of confusion
- A total commitment of the total persons for a total life
- A three-sided relationship consisting of husband, wife and God, which is also known as “progressive togetherness”

Generally, marriage is a basic task or burden you have to carry throughout your life as husband and wife. Your partner will not always please you by 100%, due to your biological or background differences & also because he/she is not an Angel.

A husband’s protectiveness over his wife also saves her from spiritual attacks. Marriage, most especially when a woman lives under the protection of her husband, she can move with great freedom in spiritual things as well as all other matters.

BASIC NEEDS OF MARRIAGE:
The basic need or requirements in a marriage is “compatibility”.
Without compatibility, marriage can never stand or live in peace and harmony. Moreso, its’ mostly enjoyable (partially) when they both have similar vision.
Pray together constantly for stabilization of sincere love. Stick to your marriage vows despite all the odds and attractions in the society. Endeavour to isolate from whatsoever that could lead you into a trap that may tarnish your marriage.

Men side:
As a man you should be in best position to support and encourage your wife along the line of her vision, knowing that she’s the weaker vessel and not celebrating her few mistakes, exaggerate her challenges or keep silent on her successes. IT’S VERY WRONG!

As a husband or even those in courtship, have to plan things with your wife, not you planning alone. This will enable her know your level of forwardness and in that case there won’t be any misunderstanding. Learn to plan things ahead of time along with your wife. Be the chief reminder & organizer of every of your family and personal – (Wife & Husband) celebration & learn to appreciate her.

Note: The law of focus says: Anything you meditate on grows inside you, what you spend the majority of your life thinking about is what you end up becoming. Therefore, think about each other daily, the way you usually think about your job or business.
You need to spend quality time with each other to enable you know your dos & don’ts, so that you can avoid critical misunderstanding. Often share your view & ideas together.

BUILD YOUR HOME/MARRIAGE WITH CHRIST:
“We wouldn’t think of building a stone fireplace without stones or of baking an apple pie without apples. Why then are so many people trying to build Christian homes without Christ? They try to maintain Christian principles, establish a Christian home & even use Christian terminology, but without the presence of Christ, there cannot be a Christian home. The great and holy God must be fulfilling in that home. He must be leaving in the hearts of those who call that house home.
Constantly allow Jesus to be the “extra ordinary strategies” in your marriage. And be fully hypnotized by HIS Words.

IN CASE OF CONFLICT OR CONFUSION PERIOD:
Learn to use “I” message instead of “you” message.
“I” messages makes us communicate our own feelings and take responsibility for them. They give others & mostly your spouse information about us. It simply means – we’re being more open. They suspend blame and improve trust & also help good communication.

“You” messages do the opposite & “get at” other people and make critical judgments.
They give little information about us & block further discussion.

THE SECRETE OF MARRIAGE:
The secret of marriage is simply - “Mutual understanding”.
Understanding bridges the dialogue of misunderstanding & grant you an enjoyable & peaceful marriage.

Spending time together & talking helps to prevent misunderstanding, but lack of communication builds up resentments. When we are open to each other & give more information about our inner thought & feelings, it usually improves our understanding & makes us slower to blame.

All these above explanations are mostly what marriage is all about. Unfortunately some who are not yet married only focus on saying –
“I want to get married”, thinking that marriage is just all about bed of roses, without knowing the real meaning of it. Including those already into marriage, still not fully aware of the broad meaning of marriage and these are part of the reasons why some are collapsing in this our recent society.

Anyway, I’m sure you have gained from this teaching & I hereby advice you to start applying it in your home from today, to enable you enjoy a romantic & peaceful marriage, to the glory of God.

You are not an accident.

Your birth was no mistake or mishap, and your life is no fluke of nature. Your parents may not have planned you, but God did. He was not at all surprised by your birth. In fact, he expected it.
Long before you were conceived by your parents, you were conceived in the mind of God. He thought of you first. It is not fate, nor chance, nor luck, nor coincidence that you are breathing at this very moment. You are alive because God wanted to create you! The Bible says, “The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me.”

God prescribed every single detail of your body. He deliberately chose your race, the color of your skin, your hair, and every other feature. He custom-made your body just the way he wanted it. He also determined the natural talents you would possess and the uniqueness of your personality. The Bible says, “You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something.”
Because God made you for a reason, he also decided when you would be born and how long you would live. He planned the days of your life in advance, choosing the exact time of your birth and death. The Bible says, “You saw me before I was born and scheduled each day of my life before I began to breath. Everyday was recorded in your book.”

God also planned where you’d be born and where you’d live for His purpose. Your race and nationality are no accident. God left no detail to chance. He planned it all for His purpose. The Bible says, “From one man he made every nation,….and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.” Nothing in your life is arbitrary. It’s all for a purpose.

Most amazing, God decided how you would be born. Regardless of the circumstances of your birth or who your parents are, God had a plan in creating you. It doesn’t matter whether your parents were good, bad, or indifferent. God knew that those two individuals possessed exactly the right genetic makeup to create the custom “you” he had in mind. They had the DNA God wanted to make you.

While there are illegitimate parents, there are no illegitimate children. Many children are unplanned by their parents, but they are not unplanned by God. God’s purpose took into account human error, and even sin.

God never does anything accidentally, and he never makes mistakes. He has a reason for everything he creates. Every plant and every animal was planned by God, and every person was designed with a purpose in mind.

God’s motive for creating you was his love. The Bible says, “Long before He laid down earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love.”

God was thinking of you even before he made the world. In fact, that’s why he created it! God designed this planet’s environment just so we could live in it. We are the focus of his love and the most valuable of all his creation. The Bible says, “God decided to give us life through the word of truth so we might be the most important of all the things he made.” This is how much God loves and values you!

God id not haphazard; he planned it all with great precision. The more physicists, biologist, and other scientists learn about the universe, the better we understand how it is uniquely suited for our existence, custom-made with the exact specifications that make human life possible.
Dr. Michael Denton, senior research fellow in human molecular genetics at the University of Otago in New Zealand, has concluded, “All the evidence available in the biological sciences supports the core proposition….that the cosmos is a specially designed whole with life and mankind as its fundamental goal and purpose, a whole in which all facets of reality have their meaning and explanation in this central fact.” The Bible said the same thing thousands of years earlier: “God formed the earth….He did not create it to be empty but formed it to be inhabited.”
Why did God do all this? Why did he bother to go to all trouble of creating a universe for us? Because he is a God of love. This kind of love is difficult to fathom, but it’s fundamentally reliable. You were created as a special object of God’s love! God made you so he could love you. This is a truth to build your life on.

The Bible tells us, “God is love.” It doesn’t say God has love. He is love! Love is the essence of God’s character. There is perfect love in the fellowship of the Trinity, so God didn’t need to create you. He wasn’t lonely. But he wanted to make you in order to express his love. God says, “I have carried you since you were born; I have taken care of you from your birth. Even when you are old, I will be the same. Even when your hair has turned gray, I will take care of you. I made you and will take care of you.” Isaiah 46:3-4

If there was no God, we would all be “accidents,” the result of astronomical random chance in the universe. You could stop reading this, because life would have no purpose or meaning or significance. There would be no right or wrong, and no hope beyond your brief years here on earth.

But there is a God who made you for a reason, and your life has profound meaning! We discover that meaning and purpose only when we make God the reference point of our lives. The message paraphrase of Romans 12:3 says, “The only accurate way to understand ourselves is by what God is and by what he does for us.”

This poem by Russel Kelfer sums it up:

You are who you are for a reason.
You’re part of an intricate plan.
You’re a precious and perfect unique design,
Called God’s special woman or man.

You look like you look for a reason.
Our God made no mistake.
He knit you together within the womb,

Ikaw naman ang ikakasal.
Buong luwang kitang inangkin at niyakap

Can a Wedding Planner(WP) , or what I fondly call as "WeNNER" and "worker for LOVE", attack her very own colleague? Oops, 1st and foremost, are there any (straight) males out there who are WP? Isn't this a "gurl" thing? =)

How can we satisfy a client every time?

Is this a career for the rich and famous? Or should we serve only the rich and famous? Is everything that we are all doin' for the sake of good "business" alone?

Two Maids of Honor, anyone?

After reading that our very own immune system can attack our nervous system, I suddenly asked myself, is there a "dirty" competition in wedding industry? In our W@W discussions, with the respectful & truly helpful!=) John & Bennette Rana as moderators, we all agreed that we are here to provide help and support for one another. 100% of the true blue WPs that I've met are very approachable, and with magnetic personalities. (Wow! I love my colleagues noh? Hehehe!=) Kaya I believe na walang competition whatsoever e, hehe! =) And yes, W@W stands for Weddings at Work. 'Yung sikat. =))

How can we satisfy a client every time? A clincher question, that is. Pero how to satisfy Meg, your Wedding Planner? Easy. Just respect. =)

Is this a career for the rich and famous? I feel God's presence in weddings and everywhere. Thus,

And thinking over what I've learned in the net, two Maids of Honor can be extremely hard if they aren't friends. I even read a blog stating that it was a disaster. (Woman of Order and Admin Head nga ako ng Students for Christ before eh, modesty aside. Nyak! Kaya nga pala ako nag-WP. I love details nga kasi, as in! Another trivia: Color-coordinated po ang lahat ng clothes ko... pati po hangers!=))

And oh! I don't like the idea that there is a sickness like Gillian-Barre. It's frightening that one's immune system can attack his own nervous system. Accordingly, it often causes paralysis.

Oh well, I believe that if you're called to be WP, you should say 'Aye, Lord!' wholeheartedly.
Because not following His will is far worse than any paralysis. =)

And as you can probably tell, I turn up my gutsy energy as high as possible. It makes me realize that I am always growing and changing. If you have it, then give it. I wanna learn a lot of things so that I can give more and more... and more! =)

I really thought that it was Friday kanina kaya nag-shopping na naman ang lolah ninyo ng napakaraming history books. (Ooops! For my English students, your "jologs" mentor would be "taglishing" again ha? I write faster this way kasi. For my serious blogs, my pen name is D*** (Ahem! =))

As I was saying, I went to SM Sta. Rosa today to get the ff:

The actual cost should be more than P 7,500. But I got it all for only 2500!
Thus, a savings of more than 5K! =)

3. When I was giving a P20 tip on the tricycle driver, he said that P10 would be enough. Whoa! I gave him P50 instead nga. Kaka-aliw po kasi. As I have reiterated before, I value integrity or the willingness not to compromise what shouldn't be compromised. Sinabi ko na lang na "para po sa baby ninyo." After hearing that, sinabi niyang I am a blessing to many.=) One of the immediate evils that follows on the coattails of love for money is the loss of a person's character. And I am just so glad to see a gem kay manong driver kanina.=)

Nweys, because of all these discounts, I ended up treating my family pa. Yahoo! Thank God! =)

But a realization came: we all crave for discounts and freebies.

As much as possible, I give value on my clients' money. I believe that all wedding planners will admit on this fact: We are only human beings; thus, we err and can sometimes play favorites. We can really do special favors for *bridengels (aka bride angels; the opposite of bridezillas =))

Did you know that Attila the Hun died of Nose Bleed?

Anyways, I am currently reading two History books. My super fave!=) I make sure that I can read a chapter or two every day. I feel like feeding my brain cells with interesting anecdotes po kasi. I am somehow in need of variation. (Puro Chemistry at Events na lang ang laman ng utak ko e. =))

I am now at the 4th century. I met the Four Great Fathers of the Latin Church (namely Jerome, Ambrose, Augustine and Gregory the Great) already. On my next read: Manichaeism.

I was also having a little chat with my (lawyer) dad. (And as usual, nose bleed na naman ang lolah ninyo. Hehehe!=)) My (pretty) mom and I ended up talking na lang about my most fave topic. Events management, that is. =)

Actually, my folks and some of my friends dislike the idea that I am so fascinated with this career. I was offered a Mall Manager position three weeks ago kasi. And gee, the pay was so tempting! With car plan, insurance and lots of perks! And last sem, several friends even recommended me to be their School Director, Marketing Head, Chief Editor, etc. Now, that's the ultimate dream for many people. Tanga na nga lang daw ang tatanggi duon. Therefore, ladies and gentlemen, "tanga" ako. Hehehe! C'mon, that's a comic gold. =)

As for me, nothing beats the excitement of events. It's just so thrilling!!! After all, it's for and all about people. And I love human beings, hehehe! =) Kiddin' aside, I was never tempted with money. I would still cheerfully serve to as many people as possible kahit walang bayad. But, of course, it would be (more than) naive for me to say that I don't need it. It's just that I was not raised to love money. According to the book that I read last time, "everything is passing, nothing is secure."

I also believe in equality and that there's plenty for everyone. In fact, I believe in the virtue there is in generosity. Whenever I commute nga po, which is my way of life, my (one-way) transpo cost should be only P8.50, right? There are amiable drivers who still give me a "Student Discount" pa nga e. But I give them P10 instead. My fave line to whoever renders me with a great service is to "please keep the change." Alam po ninyo, whenever my bill arrives and the service is remarkable, my tip is automatically set at 10%. VAT inclusive pa ha?=) Sana po I can convince you more with the blessings of being a cheerful giver now. After all, my dealings are all from God. =)

As long as my family, friends and I are havin' healthy and happy lives, I believe that I have all that I need. Note: I seldom do follow ups on my clients' inquiries. I believe that He chooses the clients for me. And that my surplus is for all His goodness.

My money in the bank may be worthless in few more years; the insurance may even be out of business when I need 'em most. But there's only thing that remains forever, and that is the love of God. =)

And yes, my faith would be more than my personal history;
it'd be my personal legend. =)

The Ateneo Institute of Literary Arts and Practices (AILAP) now accepts applications for the 8th Ateneo National Writers Workshop (ANWW) to be held on October 20-25, 2008. Each applicant should submit a portfolio in triplicate of any of the following works: five poems, three short stories, written in Filipino or English, with a title page bearing the author's pseudonym and a table of contents.

The 8th ANWW will not be accepting portfolios for one-act plays as a separate workshop will be conducted for this. Details will be announced later this year. The portfolio must also be accompanied by a diskette containing a file of the documents saved in Rich Text Format. All submissions must include a sealed envelope containing the author's name, address, contact numbers, e-mail address, and a one-page resume including a literary curriculum vitae with a 1x1 ID picture. A History of Prom

Proms of the twenty-first century are elaborate affairs dominated by designer dresses, fancy stretch limousines,
and incredible competition for a place in the prom court. Popular literature and movies of the day increasingly
focus on prom themes, and teenagers may spend months planning and preparing for the all-important night. With all of
the significance attached to the proms of today, it seems a bit surprising that the event has existed in all of its
splendor only since the 1950s. While formal dances for young people were common as early as the late 1800s, proms
began to take on today’s iconic status in a teenager’s life only as America recovered from the Great Depression and
World War II. During their relatively short history, proms grew from simple affairs in Sunday dress to extravaganzas
where competition for the best prom dress, the best date, and the best prom court distinction took center stage.

Prom Etymology
The term “prom” comes from the word “promenade,” meaning a march of guests into a ballroom to announce the beginning
of a formal event or ball. During the Victorian era in the United States, when social class distinctions were much
more important than they are today, it was not uncommon for members of the upper class to hold grand balls where
each guest was announced before entering. A similar event for younger people, the debutante ball, was also quite
common among the upper classes. In a debutante ball, girls who were entering a certain stage of adolescence
officially “came out” into the dating scene to meet appropriate suitors their parents had selected. Strict etiquette
was a must at these balls, and young girls and their escorts wore only the finest of apparel.

First Proms
The first proms came about as middle-class replications of the grand debutante balls. Parents in the middle class
noticed and admired the poise of the debutantes and wished the same for their own young teens. Thus, proms were
created as less expensive, less elaborate affairs where teenagers could meet in their finest clothes to share dinner
(and sometimes dancing) while learning social etiquette together.

While evidence of the first high school proms was not recorded in high school yearbooks until the 1930s and 1940s,
historians believe proms existed at the college level well before that time period. Taking evidence from the journal
of a male student at Amherst College from 1894 which detailed a prom he had attended at earby Smith College,

historians believe proms were common affairs at colleges in the nineteenth century (Marling 2004). While “prom” may
have then been nothing more than a fancy name for a regular junior or senior class dance, its classification as a
special night was definitely in existence and it would only continue to grow in status during the coming century.

Proms and High School
At the high school level, proms were likely a regular event by the early 1900s. These turn-of-the-century proms were
generally simple affairs where youth came only to dine together in their Sunday best. However, by the 1920s and
1930s, dancing had also become an essential element of the prom. Rather than a simple gathering, the prom was now an
annual class banquet where students met with each other and danced afterward.

By the 1950s, Americans were enjoying more affluence than ever before, and the importance and fancy nature of proms
grew in relation. Proms began to move from high school gyms to hotel ballrooms or country club banquet halls, and
competition for the best dress and the best escort greatly intensified. Prom also developed into a hallmark moment
in a teen’s life, and being voted “prom queen” became a very important aspiration and distinction for young girls
(Marling 2004). Indeed, as expensive prom dresses and fancy tuxedos became the norm, prom became less of a simple
gathering of young people and more of a time to show off and be admired.

Proms of Today
Today, prom continues to be an important event in a teenager’s life. The prominence of prom and prom themes in
popular literature and films attests to its importance at the high school level. However, while expenses and
extravagant themes for prom continue to rise, proms are also beginning to grow more and more liberal in the twenty-
first century. It is now not always required for a teen to have a date to attend the prom--and many teenagers are
choosing to attend the prom in groups, making the night less of a date event and more of a meaningful way to
commemorate high school friendships. Gay and lesbian youth are also revolutionizing the meaning of a “prom date,” as
same-sex couples are becoming increasingly more common at proms. While the prom will likely continue to be an
important event in most teenagers’ lives, in many ways its meaning and iconic status are splintering. Some youth see
it as the ultimate high school event, while others see it simply as a fun and fancy way to celebrate high school
life and friendship.

The 'seven curses' of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo

EVEN before she could deliver her eighth state of the nation address (SONA) this coming Monday, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has already been weighed and found wanting by over 80 former senior government officials. In their own take on the state of the nation after seven years of the Arroyo administration, the former officials, who served in the four post-Marcos governments and collectively called FSGO, castigated the President for being "the worst threat to the state of our nation." "The person pretending to tell us about the dire state of our nation next Monday," FSGO said, "is the very same same person who has done the most to destroy the very foundation of our nation, sell its future to its exploiters and abusers, and consign the poor and middle class to deeper poverty and worse despair." The group identified seven curses that it said Arroyo has wrought upon the nation.

*1. The curse of a country unable to feed its own people* FSGO noted that rice self-sufficiency was a priority in Arroyo's first SONA in 2001 and that she reiterated the promise of food on every table in her 2003 address. "Yet, in every year throughout her administration thus far, the country was importing increasing quantities of rice every year, that this year the Philippines achieved an odd milestone in rice self-sufficiency: our becoming the world's largest rice importer." The government has also failed to implement the Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization program, says FSGO. It adds that the Department of Agriculture (DA) has never received P17 billion in incremental funds provided for by law. Worse, the President "let loose" people like Jocelyn 'Joc-Joc' Bolante in the DA. A former agriculture undersecretary, Bolante has been implicated in diverting P728 million in fertilizer funds allegedly for Arroyo's 2004 election campaign. Furthermore, the agricultural trade deficit ballooned to over P1.5 billion in 2006. "The high food prices pushing more people into hunger and poverty are a direct result of our government's neglect of agriculture," the group added.

*2. The curse of worsening poverty and increasing disparity between the rich and poor * This, said FSGO, is due to "economic mismanagement that ignores the needs of the many to serve the interests of the few." It pointed out that the ranks of the unemployed number 2.9 million, while another seven million are looking for additional work to supplement their income. Poverty incidence increased to 26.9 percent in 2006 from 24.4 percent in 2004. This means that there are 4.6 million poor families. Elementary school attendance fell to 83.2 percent in the school year of 2006-2007 compared to 90.3 percent just three years ago. Again, the group said, the government is to blame. "Public education's ability to rescue poor families from the poverty trap has suffered due to severe underspending by the government." The Estrada administration had a "more constrained" budget, but it spent P5,830 per student from 1998-2001 while the Arroyo government spent only P5,304 per student from 2001-2006. The country remains one of the lowest spenders on education in Southeast Asia, FSGO pointed out. Once a leader in education-for-all indicators during the 90s, the country now lags behind Indonesia, Mongolia and Vietnam.

*3. The curse of deteriorating basic social services essential to the survival and welfare of the people * "Our current fiscal state was improved, not by sold revenue effort, but by deep cuts in social and economic spending," FSGO said, pointing to the government's allocation of resources for development expenditures which has been the lowest in the region. Worse, the group said, the allocation, management and use of public funds are "marked by such greed and disregard of the public good that can only be condemned as scandalous." While much of Visayas was being devastated by Typhoon Frank last month, Arroyo and her entourage were on a "junket" to the U.S., said FSGO, estimating the cost of the Philippine delegation visit to be at least P300 million. "In contrast, how much did our government spend on relief for the typhoon victims?" asked the group. Of the eight million people affected by disasters from 2004 to 2006, it said, only half received assistance from the government and private sector. Meanwhile, a Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, already contracted and delivered in 1997, has yet to be implemented by the Department of Transportation and Communication.

*4. The curse of the national government gripped by a metastatic cancer of corruption*
The Philippines has made a dismal showing in global corruption rankings. In 2007, it was reported as the "most corrupt" among ten of East Asia's leading economies by the World Bank. In 2005, Transparency International ranked the Philippines in the category of countries perceived to suffer from severe corruption, the 117th most corrupt out of 159 countries. "Corruption has become pervasive, persistent, prolific. And the President, instead of fighting it, has become its prime practitioner and protector," said FSGO, accusing Arroyo of corrupting "the already weak" electoral process, "the already diminished" civil service, and the "already politicized" public investment and fiscal programs.

*5. The curse of wanton abuse of presidential prerogatives* FSGO said that the balance of power within the Arroyo administration between its "dark and bright sides" has tipped radically in favor of the dark side. "A new type of presidential appointee along the Joc-Joc Bolante brand dominates. The appointments of others already rejected by the electorate in 2007 will further darken the complexion of her Cabinet." Social Security Services administrator Romulo Neri merits special mention. Neri, a former socioeconomic planning secretary and higher education chairman, "became one of the keepers of evil secrets, protected by the talisman of 'executive privilege' as long as he remains in a Cabinet position." The government has also been packed with ineligible bureaucrats.

*6. The curse of an illegitimate president * The president has consistently promised clean, computerized elections — in her 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2006 SONAs. But the group said that after seven years, she has yet to take any sure steps toward this. Nor does her recent appointment of unknown commissioners to the Commission on Elections bode well for future elections. "President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo promised us a strong Republic. We have realized that she is running a stolen Republic. Thus far, we have seen her trying to keep only what was stolen."

*7. The curse of a nation robbed of its dignity, unity and future* Aside from the country's "global reputation for pervasive corruption, " the Philippines has also been investigated by international organizations for extra-judiical killings. FSGO said that our national patrimony, from mineral resources to possible oil deposits have been peddled to foreign interests like ukay-ukay (used clothing). "The loss of our country's good international standing and credibility has been a sad victim of Arroyo's bad governance." While the President cites the legions of overseas Filipino workers as an achievement of her administration, the group warned of the ills of a remittance-driven economy, including reduced competitiveness of manufacturing and tradeables from export and impot-competing sectors, and less demand on infrastructure, which has led to less necessary public investment. FSGO described this type of economy as "limited and self-undermining because remittances cannot be expected to remain high and grow at an increasing rate." In response to the FSGO statement, Presidential Management Staff chief Cerge Remonde told the Inquirer: "These people would know how difficult and how challenging governance is…this administration can stand on its record, and its record is better than how [they] managed their respective government positions during their time." FSGO, however, disagreed. In an internal survey among its members, the former government officials rated the current administration a dismal 1.1 on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest. Despite its bleak assessment, however, FSGO remains hopeful. I was ruminating over and over the blessings of the Almighty in our lives.
At times po kasi, events planners can be so proud (ahem, guilty!=)
We seem to feel the power in our hands to create the most memorable events.
And those memories are something that can not be traded
for diamonds or gold, I believe.

However, I had a share of humbling experiences na rin naman.
Bridezillas, mishaps, imperfections...
I surely cried galore!

It's hard to pretend to be "perfect"
when in fact there's no such thing as perfect.

Then, one day, I realized that I need to surrender EVERYTHING to God.
God is, after all, just allowing me to use His gifts...
for the sake of LOVE.

Three reunions (high school & orgs).

World's Top Photo Show Visits Manila

The internationally acclaimed annual World Press Photo Exhibition will be on view in three venues in Metro Manila, for the second year in a row, from August 1 -22.

The exhibit, featuring about 200 photos that won awards in the 2007 World Press Photo Competition, will be open to the public for free at The Podium, Aug. 1-7; SM Mall of Asia, Aug. 8-13, and The Block SM North-EDSA, Aug. 14 -22. A partnership project of the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University(ACFJ) and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the show has also drawn support from The Podium, SM Supermalls and Unilever Philippines.

The competition’s photo of the year – an image of an American soldier resting at a bunker in Afghanistan, taken by the British photographer Tim Hetherington and carried by Vanity Fair – top bills the exhibit. The picture bested about 80,536 photographs submitted to the competition by 5,019 photographers from 125 countries.

The exhibit is part of ACFJ’s photojournalism program which was initiated in 2006 with the support of the World Press Photo. At the heart of the program is the Diploma in Photojournalism, a seven-course online learning program for photojournalists. The program has drawn some of the country’s finest young photojournalists as students and is run by an international faculty of senior photographers and academics. One of its graduates, Jaime “VJ” Villafranca, freelance photographer, recently won the Ian Parry Scholarship 2008, an international competition run by The Sunday Times (London), with a photo essay on youth gangs that was the major essay in the portfolio he submitted for the diploma program.

The competition and the traveling exhibit have been run since 1955 by the World PressPhoto, the Amsterdam-based media NGO that is reputed to be the world’s most significant and prestigious platform for press photography.

Shown each year at about 85 venues in 40 countries, the exhibit features the year’s top photo along with award-winning images from each of the 10 contest categories including spot news, general news, people in the news, nature, contemporary issues, sports actions, sports features, daily life, portraits and arts and entertainment.

The high quality of photojournalism involved is considered to set a standard in the field.

Filipino photographer Albert Garcia won the first prize in the nature and environment category in the 1991 competition for his picture of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption.

Last year the exhibit was also shown in the same three venues, drawing huge crowds thatwere invariably awed, fascinated and moved by gripping pictures of the news stories that hugged the headlines. The show was likewise co-sponsored by ACFJ and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with support from The Podium and SM Supermalls.

This year the group, along with Unilever Philippines, aims to bring campus journalists to the exhibit through guided tours and lectures.

Unilever, an Anglo-Dutch group of companies, brought the exhibit to Manila in 2001. According to Jika Mendoza-Dalupan, corporate relations director, Unilever’s support to World Press Photo stems from the company’s mission of supporting the arts and culture of the countries where it operates.
